Immigration Soars to New Heights in OECD Countries
In a recent report, it’s been revealed that immigration to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries surged to unprecedented levels last year, hitting a historic high. According to data released by the OECD on Monday, a whopping 6.1 million immigrants made their way to these nations, marking a substantial 26 percent increase from the previous year. Notably, in June 2023, approximately 4.7 million individuals from Ukraine were documented in member countries.
Highlighting the trend, the report underscores that one-third of all 38 OECD nations witnessed their highest immigration figures in the past 15 years during 2022. Among them, France welcomed 301,000 newcomers, Spain saw 471,000 arrivals, and Belgium had 122,000 immigrants. Particularly, the United Kingdom and Canada stood out with record-breaking numbers, according to OECD statistics.
Workforce Integration
The surge in global immigration can be attributed to a pressing demand for skilled labor, as per the OECD analysis. Consequently, there was a notable 21 percent increase in the influx of foreign workers, now on par with immigration for humanitarian reasons. Additionally, the number of asylum applications filed in OECD countries skyrocketed to two million last year, with 730,000 in the United States alone. Germany experienced a remarkable 47 percent uptick in asylum seekers in 2022 compared to the previous year, totaling 218,000 individuals, with the majority originating from Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
